Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. N. S. MATTHEWS was born in Grant County, Ky., August 25, 1851, and is the eldest of six children born to T. M. and Ann M. (Smith) Matthews. T. M. Matthews was born in Boone County, Ky., in 1828; in the early part of his life he was engaged in the mercantile business, and in the latter part in farming pursuits, near Verona, Boone County. He died in November, 1880, a strict member of the Baptist Church. He was a son of William and Winnie (Morris) Matthews. William was born in Virginia, and was one of the first settlers of Campbell County, Ky. He was engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1849, when he went to California to dig for gold, and was very successful. He died in that State. Mrs. Ann M. Matthews was born in Grant County, Ky., February 29, 1824, and was the only child born to R. B. and Elizabeth (Sims) Smith. Mr. Smith was highly educated, and was teaching in Grant County at the time of his death. N. S. Matthews was educated at the best schools in the county, and commenced to read medicine in 1874 under R. L. Finnell, of Verona, Boone County. He attended lectures at the Ohio Medical College, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1874-75, and in 1875-76. He then located in New Alsace, Dearborn Co., Ind., and pursued his profession diligently and successfully until 1879, when he again entered college at the same place, and graduated in the spring of 1880. He also took a special course on the eye and ear under Prof. W. W. Seeley, of Cincinnati. He then located in Covington, Ky., but remained only a short time; removing to Williamstown, Grant County, he formed a partnership with Dr. W. C. Johnson, and after three successful business years they dissolved, and our subject has ever since been actively engaged on his own account. He was married, June 20, 1870, to Maria Turner, of Grant County, who was born November 4, 1850, daughter of Alex and Elizabeth (Clark) Turner. Three children have blessed this union: Clara C., born November 25, 1872; Harry P., born October 3, 1875, and Edna E., born May 6, 1878. Mrs. Matthews died May 10, 1880, in Covington, Ky., a strict member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The Doctor married, November 5, 1885, Miss Belle C. Innis, of Columbus, Ohio, a daughter of Col. G. S. and Sarah (Morrill) Innis. G. S. Innis was born near Columbus, Ohio. He was colonel in the late war of the One Hundred and Thirty-third Ohio Federal Volunteers. He was warden in the Ohio penitentiary for two years, and superintendent of the reform school for two years. N. S. Matthews owns 100 acres of fine land near Williamstown. As a citizen he is popular, companionable, public spirited, and enjoys the confidence and respect of all who know him.
