My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN CONRAD was born in Grant County, Ky., in 1845, and is a son of Jacob and Eliza (Renneckar) Conrad, of Virginia, but of German ancestry. John Conrad was reared on a farm, and has followed farming as an occupation all his life. In 1862 he entered the Confederate Army under Humphrey Marshall, but was transferred to Morgan’s command. In 1863 he was captured at Buffington Island, Ohio, and was held a prisoner at Camp Douglas about twenty-three months, with the exception of one month, when he was sent to Richmond, Va., then to Clayton, N. C., and was discharged at Washington, Ga., in May, 1865, when he returned to his labors on the farm. In June, 1877, his father died, his mother having died in 1860. Mr. Conrad now owns 405 acres of valuable land in Grant County, and is a member of the Baptist Church. In 1871 he married Miss Zerilda Kinslaer, daughter of James and Mary (Jamison) Knislaer, of Harrison County. She was born May 31, 1851, and was a mute, but her children, six boys, are entirely free from any defect of that kind. Following are their names and dates of birth: Richard C., born March 26, 1873; Walter L., January 8, 1875; Fitzhugh Lee, October 24, 1876; Guy, August 14, 1879; John S., August 11, 1882; Clay Willis, December 20, 1885.
