My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN A. LEMON, a native of Grant County, Ky., was born May 5, 1842, and is the eldest son of Vance and Margaret (Shields) Lemon, natives, respectively of Scott and Harrison Counties, Ky. Vance Lemon was a son of a veteran of the war of 1812, who was born in Virginia, but of Irish extraction, and who came to Kentucky about 1800 and settled in Scott County. Vance Lemon removed from Scott to Grant County about 1840, and died about 1879. John A. Lemon was educated principally in Williamstown and the high schools of Harrison County, Ky., and has chiefly followed farming as a vocation, although for several years he was interested in a saw and grist-mill. In 1884 he was elected county superintendent, and is the present incumbent of that office. December 23, 1866, he married Miss Georgia A. Lowe, a native of Pendleton County, and daughter of Moses Lowe. To this union four children have been born, viz.: Dora A., Robert F., Laura and Effie. Mr. Lemon is the owner of and resides upon thirty acres of land adjoining Williamstown, and is a member of the Odd Fellows lodge of that place. In politics he is a Democrat.
