FRANCIS E. EVARTS was born in Eaton, Madison Co., N. Y., January 5, 1835, the son of B. B. and Betsie (Tyler) Evarts, of English descent. He was reared on a farm near Binghampton, Broome Co., N. Y., but learned painting for a trade. After coming west he volunteered in the Thirty-sixth Illinois Cavalry, Company B, was in the battle of Pea Ridge, and was discharged after one year’s service, when he returned to his place of residence, Aurora, Ill. In 1875 he came to Kentucky, and settled at Williamstown, Grant County, where he was connected with the construction of the Southern Railroad, and in 1883 engaged in the livery business. He was married in 1857 to Miss Martha Hawks, of Mendota, Ill., who bore him one child — Minnie — and died in 1869. His second marriage took place August 4, 1886, to Ettie Ecton, of Grant County, Ky.
