Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

C. D. REED was born near Cane Ridge Church, in Bourbon County, in 1825, and is a son of Coleman D. and Emily (Rodgers) Reed. Coleman D. Reed was a son of Jonathan Reed, whose wife was a Miss Starks before marriage — both natives of Virginia. Jonathan Reed came to Kentucky with his family, and settled in Bourbon County in 1802; he was a farmer. C. D. Reed was educated in Harrison County common schools. He has always been a farmer, and settled in Grant County in 1849, where he owns 140 acres of land. He was magistrate of the county from 1855 to 1859. July 28, 1846, he married Harriet A. Humphrey, of Harrison County, a daughter of David T. and Mary (Coleman) Humphrey, natives of Virginia. Five children have blessed this union, viz.: Coleman D., married Maggie Kinslaer, of Grant County; Mary E., wife of W. A. Hume, a farmer of Grant County, has five children; John M.; Ida M., wife of William Ammerman, of Harrison County, has three children, and Frank McClelland. Mr. Reed is a member of the Masonic lodge, a Democrat, and a member of the Christian Church.
