Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DAVID R. LOCK, a native of London, England, was born February 2, 1835, and is a son of John B. and Nancy (Richards) Lock, natives of Devonshire, England. John B. Lock immigrated to Newport, Ky., in 1849, was a grocer, and for a number of years was poor commissioner, and also treasurer of the city schools; he was born in 1808, and died in 1880. David R. Lock was educated in the common schools of London, England, and Newport, Ky., and learned the trade of a plasterer, serving an apprentice ship of three years. He worked at his trade for a number of years, when he was appointed city collector, and served four years as city marshal. That office being abolished in 1876, he became chief of police with sixteen subordinates. He is the proprietor of a fish, game and oyster depot at No. 117 York Street, and is the Newport agent for the Champion Ice Company of Covington. In 1862 he entered the Federal Army as second lieutenant of Company E, Eighth Kentucky Cavalry, and August 3, 1863, was captured at Elkton, Ky., and released in March, 1865. In 1859 he married Miss Sarah Hagerty, of Newport, and one child, William H., born in 1861, has blessed their union. Mr. Lock is a Mason and a Knight Templar, a Republican politically, and a member of the Episcopal Church in religion.
