My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN BARTON was born in Prince William County, Va., October 1, 1803, and was the second of seven children born to Valentine and Ellinor (Moore) Barton, both of whom were natives of Virginia. They immigrated to Kentucky in about 1812, and settled in Boone County, about two miles below Petersburg on the Ohio River, but purchased land in Indiana, where Aurora is now situated. In a few years Mr. Barton sold his Indiana land, and moved to where John Barton now resides, where he purchased about 150 acres of land, but at the time of his death he owned about 300 acres. John Barton was brought up on the farm, and received a common-school education. He has followed fanning from boyhood, and has lived where he now resides since about 1815, where he owns about 200 acres of land, all well improved. In 1868 he built his present residence, a beautiful two-story frame house. November 3, 1859, he married Mrs. Amanda Bail, the widow of Benjamin P. Bail, of Missouri, and a daughter of Frank F. and Lucinda (Anderson) Robinson, natives of Virginia and Boone County, Ky., respectively. Mrs. Barton had one child by her first husband, Lucie E., who died September 11, 1881, and was the wife of Walter Lampton, of Pike County, Miss. To them three sons were born, viz.: Leslie B., Hollis D. and Claudie L. Mr. Barton is a member of the Methodist Church; politically he is a Democrat.
