Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

EDWIN WILLIAM DUNCAN, M. D., a practicing physician of Walton, Ky., was born in Boone County, Ky., December 30, 1860, and is the second of a family of four children born to James W. and Louann (Graves) Duncan. He was reared on a farm, and received a collegiate education at Georgetown. James W. Duncan, a farmer, was elected circuit court clerk in 1874, served until 1880, and our subject was deputy clerk under him. Edwin W. began the study of medicine in 1882 under Dr. Joseph G. Furnish, of Burlington, Ky., and attended the medical lectures of the Ohio Medical College, at Cincinnati, where he graduated in 1885, March 6. He settled at Belleview, Ky., but remained there only six months, and then went to Walton, Ky., where he still continues to practice. Dr. Duncan is a member of the Baptist Church; politically he is a Democrat. June 15, 1887, he married Miss Lizzie Jane Kennedy, of near Walton, Ky.
