Below is a family biography included in History of Union County, Iowa published by S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., in 1908.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Dr. M. B. Reed, engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery in Cromwell for the past eighteen years, was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, March 24, 1856. His father, Benjamin Reed, removed to Iowa, settling in Madison county in 1863, after which he opened up a new farm there. Upon that place he reared his family and spent his last years, passing away in 1894.

Dr. Reed was reared to manhood in Madison county and completed his literary education at Battle Creek College in Michigan. Determining upon a professional career, he took up the study of medicine and pursued his first course of lectures in Keokuk, Iowa, in 1887. He completed his studies there by graduation in the class of 1888 and located for practice in Madison county, where he remained for a year. In 1889 he removed to Cromwell, where he has since been located and throughout the intervening years he has enjoyed a constantly growing patronage, owing to the fact that he keeps abreast with the profession in all of its discoveries which go to promote efficiency among the followers of the medical fraternity. He is a member of the State Medical, the Southwestern Iowa and the County Medical societies and has been a member of the county examining board for pensions for ten years.

In 1887 Dr. Reed was married at Truro, Iowa, to Miss Hester B. Reed, who was born and reared in Madison county. They had one child, Frank Foster Reed, who died at the age of sixteen months. Politically Dr. Reed is a republican and for ten or twelve years has served as clerk of Douglas township. He has also been a member of the Cromwell board of aldermen and secretary of the school board. Both he and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal church. He has erected a good residence here and is now comfortably situated in life, owing to the success which he has achieved in his professional career.
