J. C. SULLIVAN.
A native of Maine, J. C. Sullivan was born in the city of Portland on the 1st of June, 1853, and there he was reared to the age of nineteen years, spending his boyhood days in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Sullivan. He acquired his primary education in the schools of his native city and afterward attended the Taylor business college at Rochester, New York. After putting aside his text-books he worked in numerous places at his trade of granite cutting and in 1884 came to Creston, where he established his home and began business as a marble cutter. Since that time he has conducted marble works in this city and has turned out many fine monuments. The excellence and attractiveness of his work secure him a liberal patronage and his business from the beginning has proved a profitable venture.

During the period of his residence in Creston Mr. Sullivan has made many friends, who recognize in him a public spirited and progressive citizen as well as reliable business man. This has led to his selection for official honors and in 1903 he was chosen mayor of the city. He gave an administration which received endorsement at the polls at the next election, when he was re-elected by a majority of five hundred and seventy-seven— the largest ever given in Creston. He promoted the Creston Mutual Telephone Company, and also the Creston Mutual Electric Light, Heat & Power Company. He worked along practical lines and accomplished results, Creston profiting by his labors in all those departments which are a matter of civic virtue and civic pride.
