ISAAC MACON NAUMAN.
A neat and well improved farm of one hundred and seventy acres, situated on section 30, Pleasant township, is the property of Isaac Macon Nauman, who is here engaged in general farming and stockraising. He is a native of Virginia, born May 23, 1867, and was only about a year old when brought to Iowa by his parents, who located in Cedar county, where the mother died when our subject was a little lad of six years. Later he came to Union county with his brother, B. Nauman, who located on a farm in Grant township, and he made his home with him until sixteen years of age. In the meantime he acquired a fair English education in the common schools.

On leaving the home of his brother at the age of sixteen years, Isaac M. Nauman started out upon his own account, working by the month as a farm hand, being employed for several years in this manner. He had early been trained to habits of industry and economy, so that he carefully saved his earnings, in the hope that he might someday engage in business on his own account. In 1886, attracted by the opportunities of the west, he made his way to Colorado and there entered a homestead claim, which he improved, living thereon until he was able to obtain a deed to the place. After a residence of five years thereon he sold the property and once more returned to Iowa, this being about 1893. He rented land in Union county, which he operated for several years and eventually felt justified in the purchase of a farm, coming into possession of his present property, now comprising one hundred and seventy acres. He has made many improvements since locating on his place. He remodeled the house, built a large barn and substantial cribs and sheds for the shelter of grain and stock, and also installed two wind pumps, which furnish an ample supply of water from good wells for watering the stock. He is engaged in general agricultural pursuits, raising the cereals best adapted to soil and climate, and he also raises good grades of stock, making a specialty of hogs, for which he finds a ready sale on the market, where he receives high prices.

The marriage of Mr. Nauman occurred in Afton on the 7th of September, 1902, on which date he led to the altar Miss Nettie Ames, who was born and reared in Union county. She received a liberal education, having graduated from the Afton high school in 1900, after which she engaged in teaching until the time of her marriage. Her parents are Albert C. and Laura (Marsh) Ames. The former was born in Ohio but was reared in Iowa, while his marriage occurred near Afton, in which city he is now making his home. His family consists of one son and four daughters, of whom Mrs. Nauman is one of the number.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Nauman has been blessed with two daughters and a son: Clara Edna, Laura Alice and George Raymond. Mr. Nauman has always given his support to the men and measures of democracy but at the last election cast his ballot for Theodore Roosevelt. At local elections, however, he votes for the men whom he deems best fitted for office, without regard to party ties. In 1906 he was elected to the office of township trustee but has never been active as an officeholder. Socially he is identified with Shannon City Lodge, I. O. O. F., and with the Modern Woodmen Camp, while Mrs. Nauman is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Nauman has made good use of his opportunities, for he started out in life without means and in the humble capacity of a farm hand but his well improved property of one hundred and seventy acres today indicates the prosperity which has attended his well directed efforts.
