Grant White, who resides on a finely improved farm of one hundred and thirty acres, situated on section 25, Sand Creek township, is numbered among the native sons of the state, who are gaining a gratifying income through carrying on agricultural pursuits and stock-raising. Mr. White was born in Davis county, May 1, 1871, a son of Andrew J. White, who was born in Missouri, his natal year being 1847. He lost his father when he was a little lad of three years and to his mother was left the care of the children. She is still living with her son Andrew J., having reached the very venerable age of ninety-seven years. The father was married in Ringgold county, Iowa, to Martha M. Arnold, who was born in Missouri. He was for a time engaged in farming in Davis county, while later he followed the same pursuit in Ringgold county but for the past quarter of a century has made his home in Union county.

Grant White, whose name introduces this review, was reared in Union county and there acquired a limited education but since growing to mature years he has greatly broadened his knowledge by reading, observation and investigation and may be called a self-educated man. Mr. White established a home of his own by his marriage on the 7th of March, 1894, in Sand Creek township, Union county, to Miss Lena M. Chandler, who was born in Lee county, this state, but was reared in Sand Creek township, Union county. Her father, D. F. Chandler, opened up a new farm in this county, where he still makes his home.

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. White took up their abode upon rented land but through their united efforts they eventually acquired a sum sufficient to purchase property, when Mr. White invested in forty acres, constituting a part of the farm on which he now makes his home. He improved the place with a good residence, built substantial barns and other outbuildings, fenced the place, set out shade and fruit trees and met with success in the cultivation of his fields, so that in due time he was enabled to add to his landed holdings until he is now in possession of one hundred and thirty acres, all of which is in a good state of cultivation. In addition to raising the cereals best adapted to soil and climate he is also engaged in raising and feeding stock. In 1904 he began dealing in pure blooded Duroe Jersey hogs and now has about two hundred head. Each year he holds about two sales of hogs and at his last sale his stock brought an average of one hundred and seventy-five dollars per head. He also makes exhibits at the state fair, where he has won many premiums. He also raises pure blooded Hereford cattle and now has thirty-five head, all registered stock. His prosperity is well deserved, for he has ever followed the most honorable methods in all his business dealings.

Mr. White has always given stanch support to the democratic party but has never sought public office, preferring to give his undivided time and attention to his private business interests, which are very extensive Through his long connection with farming and stock-raising interests, Mr. White is now enabled to supply his family, consisting of wife and daughters, Mary Martha and Berneta Ruth, with all the comforts and many of the luxuries of life and the hospitality of their pleasant home is greatly enjoyed by their many friends. Mr. White is also well and favorably known in business circles throughout Union and adjoining counties, for as a breeder and raiser of high grade stock he has gained a very wide acquaintance.
