George R. Lochrie, postmaster of Lorimor, being the youngest incumbent in a presidential office in Iowa at the time of his appointment in 1906, was born in Hardin county, this state, August 22, 1878. His father, James Lochrie, was a farmer and nurseryman who established a nursery business in 1887 and conducted it with success for a quarter of a century or until 1902, when he removed to Lorimor, where he has since lived a retired life. His wife, Mrs. Melisse A. Lochrie, is also yet living.

George R. Lochrie pursued his education in the country schools until eighteen years of age, when he entered the high school of Lorimor. He pursued his studies there for two years, after which he took up the profession of teaching and when he had followed it for one term he continued his own education as a student in the Des Moines college, of Iowa, where he continued for a year. After leaving school he became interested in the nursery business and when he had sold out in that line he purchased the Lorimor Journal but a year later withdrew from that scene of activity. He next became interested with Jay M. Jackson & Company in the publishing of supplies for real-estate men and in the sale of real-estate. In 1904 he again engaged in the nursery business and conducts a large retail nursery at the present time. His previous experience in this line well qualified him for the successful conduct of the business and he has secured a liberal patronage, for he has made a reputation for handling only first-class nursery stock. In 1906 he was appointed postmaster of Lorimor for a term of four years, being the youngest postmaster in a presidential office in Iowa. He has since administered the affairs of this position in systematic, accurate manner and his labors are bringing to him the commendation of the general public, who recognize his fidelity as well as his capability in the office.

Mr. Lochrie was married in 1903 to Miss Florence V. Oxley and they now have one son, Jo, who was born July 24, 1904, and a daughter, Pauline, born December 22, 1905.

Mr. Lochrie was reared in the faith of the republican party and has never failed to improve every opportunity presented to expound its principles and secure their adoption. He is favorable to tariff revision as it is carried on by friends and not the enemies of a protective tariff. Fraternally he is connected with the Masons and with the Modern Woodmen and his brethren of these orders entertain for him warm regard, while in the community he maintains an enviable reputation as a citizen, as a business man, as an official and as a friend.
