D. J. POLLOCK.
The farming interests of Jones township are well represented by D. J. Pollock, who is living on section 8. He is practical in his methods, progressive in his ideas and diligent in all that he undertakes. He is now cultivating Mount Pisgah farm, which he has leased for a term of years, so that his time and energies are now devoted to the development of a fine tract of land of four hundred and fifty acres. He has always lived in this county, his birth having occurred in Pleasant township, December 29, 1860.

His father, J. P. Pollock, was born in Knox county, Ohio, his natal day being October 14, 1825. When a young man he removed westward to Champaign county, Illinois, and made further preparations for having a home of his own by his marriage there to Miss Eliza McVay, a native of Pennsylvania. He began farming in Champaign, county and was thus identified with its business interests for several years, after which he came to Iowa in 1854 and improved a new farm in Pleasant township, Union county. He afterward improved several farms in Sand Creek and Platte townships, living a life of activity and enterprise, which resulted in making him one of the rich agriculturists of the district. He lost his wife in 1896, since which time he has made his home with his son, Judson Pollock of this review.

An account of the boyhood of most farm lads of the period and locality would be to present a character picture of the general points in, the life of Judson Pollock during the period of his minority. As a pupil in the public schools he mastered the common branches of learning, and during the periods of vacation he was largely occupied with the work of the fields, aiding in the task of plowing, planting and harvesting. Thus busily occupied he remained with his father until thirty years of age. Following his marriage he located on a farm in Dodge township, where he carried on general agricultural pursuits until 1895. He and his brother, W. V. Pollock, owned a farm there comprising three hundred and twenty acres and were partners in the cultivation of the soil and in stock-raising until 1895. Later he engaged in the raising and sale of Duroc Jersey hogs, handling pure blooded registered stock. He began in a small way but developed an extensive business which in course of time became quite profitable. He is still well known as a breeder of and dealer in registered Duroc Jerseys and makes exhibits of his stock at county fairs and at the Iowa State Fair at Des Moines, where he has carried off the championship and other premiums and also at the Creston district fair in 1907, where he won all the firsts and championship. He is a breeder and raiser of some very fine animals, for which he finds a ready sale on the market. He also keeps a good grade of registered Hereford cattle with a pure blooded male at the head of the herd, and has a number of registered cows and heifers. To extend the scope of his labors, in 1906 he leased and located upon the Mount Pisgah farm, where he now resides. Here he cultivates in the raising of cereals two hundred and fifty acres of rich land and also has two hundred acres of meadow and timbered pasture. In connection with the tilling of the soil he feeds and fattens two car loads of hogs each year. His life is characterized by untiring industry, unabating energy and unfaltering perseverance and upon these qualities his success has been builded. He now owns a fine tract of land in the famous North Platte valley in Nebraska.

Mr. Pollock was married in Dodge township, this county, on the 21st of October, 1891, to Miss Lillie B. Stalcup, who was born and reared in Union county and is a daughter of W. J. Stalcup, who was one of the early settlers from Indiana and took up his abode in Dodge township, Union county, where he developed a farm upon which he yet resides. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Pollock have been born four children, Etha Mae, J. W. Howe, Zaida Grace and Dorothy E., all yet at home. The family is well known in the community and the members of the household occupy an enviable position in social circles.

Mr. Pollock belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, to the Modern Woodmen Camp and to the Order of Fraternal Insurance. In politics he is a stanch democrat, inflexible in support of party principles. In Dodge township he was elected and served for six years as assessor and was identified with the schools for several years in an official capacity. At one time he was his party’s candidate for treasurer and received a very flattering vote although he did not overcome the strong republican majority of Union county. He has hosts of friends both in and out of the party and his substantial qualities are such as win for him genuine and lasting regard. He is reliable and straightforward in business, energetic and diligent in all that he undertakes and prompt and trustworthy in office. He has won creditable success in business but it is the real worth of the man that has gained him his large circle of friends.
