Charles S. White, who is one of the enterprising and successful farmers of Union township, his home being on section 12, was born in this county, his birth having occurred in Jones township on the 2d of October, 1865. His father, Isaac K. White, was a well known agriculturist and upon the home farm Charles S. White spent the days of his boyhood and youth. He pursued his education in the public schools and also devoted one year to study in Afton. During the periods of vacation he worked in the fields and early became familiar with the duties and labors that fall to the lot of the agriculturist. He remained at home until he reached adult age, after which he spent a year and a half in Wray, Colorado, where he took a claim of one hundred and sixty acres, which he proved up and yet owns. He then returned to this county and for two years engaged in cultivating a part of the old home place. As a companion and helpmate for the journey of life Mr. White chose Miss Mary Corbin, to whom he was married on the 30th of October, 1890. She was born near Columbus, Ohio, a daughter of Levi Corbin, who removed from the Buckeye state to Knox county, Illinois, and afterward became a resident of Union county. Mr. and Mrs. White began their domestic life upon a farm. In the beginning Mr. White had one hundred and twenty acres of land, upon which few improvements had been made, but with characteristic energy he began to cultivate and develop the place and has now an excellent property, in the midst of which stands a fine one and a half story residence, which he erected. There are also good barns, corn cribs and other outbuildings affording ample shelter for grain and stock. He has recently put up a new hog shed with cement floor and he has extended the boundaries of his farm by the purchase of an additional tract of forty acres. He engages in dairying and in feeding cattle, making a specialty of polled Angus. He owns a number of registered animals and feeds some cattle for the market. He also raises Poland China hogs as well as some good horses.

Mr. and Mrs. White have but one child, Leonard, who is now in school. The parents have a wide acquaintance in this part of the county and enjoy the high regard of those with whom they have been associated. They are members of the Christian church, at Pleasant Ridge, and Mr. White is identified with the Odd Fellows in both the subordinate lodge and the encampment. In politics he has been a life long democrat where state and national issues are involved but votes independently at local elections. He has served for six years as township trustee and is the present incumbent in the position. He has also been a member of the school board for several years and the cause of education finds in him an earnest and effective advocate. He has been a delegate to several county conventions and is widely known in the county, not only by reason of his political interest and activity but also because of his business affairs. A fine farm of one hundred and sixty acres now pays tribute to his care and labor.
