C. H. S. Powers, a resident farmer of Spaulding township, now owns and operates two hundred and ten acres on section 2 and the excellent appearance of the place indicates his careful supervision and practical methods. He was born in Bureau county, Illinois, on the 5th of March, 1872, his parents being John and Eliza (Partridge) Powers, the former a native of the state of New York and the latter of Vermont. In their family were eleven children, of whom ten are yet living, namely: Florence, the wife of Lyman Kirkpatrick, of Des Moines, Iowa; C. H. S., of this review; Nancy, deceased; Elsworth, who is living in Kewanee, Illinois; Jerome, whose home is located in the state of Washington; Bert, now in Cuba; Alice N., who teaches school and lives at home; Olive, the wife of Nelson Pratt, of Bureau county, Illinois; Lawrence, who is attending Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio; Wilbur, who is in the state of Washington; and Fred, a pupil in the high school at Tiskilwa, Illinois. The parents are still living in Bureau county.

Mr. Powers of this review acquired his early education in the common schools of Illinois and afterward became a pupil in the business college of Afton, Iowa. He made his way to this state when twenty-one years of age and worked for his uncle for two years, after which he returned to Illinois, where he spent one year. On the expiration of that period he again came to Union county and for one year cultivated a rented farm, after which he traded for eighty acres of land on section 2, Spaulding township. There he began farming on his own account and from time to time he purchased more land adjoining until he now owns two hundred and ten acres, constituting a very rich and arable tract, the fields responding readily to the care and labor which he bestows upon them. He makes a specialty of raising and feeding stock and his business in that direction has grown to large proportions and is proving a very desirable source of income.

In 1899 occurred the marriage of Mr. Powers and Miss Evva J. Saylor, a daughter of Benjamin and Clara Saylor, of whom mention is made on, another page of this work. Unto them have been born four children: Edwin C., Burton E., Aretta V. and Mabel S. The parents attend and support various churches and are highly esteemed people of the community, enjoying the hospitality of many of the best homes of Spaulding township and this part of the county. Mr. Powers votes with the republican party, while socially he is connected with Cypress lodge, No. 539, A. F. & A. M., at Orient, Iowa. Since starting out in life he has by close application and unfaltering diligence won gratifying success and is now a prosperous farmer of the community.
