Below is a family biography included in History of Page County, Iowa published by Iowa Historical Company in 1880.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. SHUGART, J. H., P. O. Shenandoah; was born in Fayetteville, Franklin county, Pennsylvania, February 29, 1840. In the fall of the same year moved with his parents to Ashland county, Ohio, residing there until the spring of 1850. In the spring of 1850 went to Illinois, spending the first summer near Peoria, moving in the fall to a farm four miles north of Princeton, Bureau county. In 1856 his parents moved to Princeton, where young Shugart received the advantages afforded by the schools of that city. In 1859 he began his apprenticeship at the tinner’s trade. Having finished his trade he returned to school determined to finish his education. In the spring of 1862 enlisted in the federal army, returning at the expiration of his time of service broken down in health. He then engaged in the hardware business in Mt. Carroll and Shannon, when the last call for troops was made and away he went again to do valiant service for his country. He returned in October, 1865. The year 1869 found him in Red Oak, and the fall of the following year in Shenandoah, the city not only of his own adoption, but to which he sustains almost the relation of a parent. His connection with the early history of the city is fully given in the chapter devoted to it. He was married February 20, 1866, to Miss Jennie B. Tippery, a native of Pennsylvania. Have five children living: Rollo J., George S., Jennie M., Joseph L. and Frank H.
