ALSTON, JOSHUA, farmer, Sec. 13; P. O. Fort Madison; was born in Lancashire, England, in 1836, where he remained until 21 years of age, and received a good common-school education. Married Miss Martha Bicheno, who was born in Cambridgeshire, England, in 1838, and one week after, sailed for America, coming direct to Newburg, Ohio, where, after working on a farm for one year, he secured work in a rolling-mill; in the fall of 1858, they came to Lee Co., West Point Tp., where he has since been engaged in farming; first by renting, until 1862, when he purchased a farm, which he exchanged for the one he now occupies, consisting of ninety-six acres, valued at $30 per acre; they have three children — Margaret M. born in 1857, (now the wife of David Snapp, a farmer of Pottawattamie Co., Iowa); Joseph W., born in 1860; Nancy A., in 1863. Republican; Mrs. Alston is a member of the M. E. Church.
