STEMPEL, HERMAN F., M, D., physician and U. S. Revenue Gauger; was born in Prussia, July 24, 1824. He was brought up and received his education there, and studied medicine; he emigrated to America in 1847; came to Iowa and settled in Ft. Madison the same year; practiced medicine until 1852; then held the office of Deputy County Treasurer and Recorder for eleven years, until January, 1864; in 1869, he was appointed U. S. Revenue Guager, and since then has held that position, and has also practiced his profession. He married Charlotte Walter, from Hanover, Germany. Nov. 10, 1853; she died in 1876, leaving six children — Eugene, Arthur, Valeska, Wolfgang, Willie and Herman; they lost three children.
