NICHOLAS HARTER, a prominent citizen of Pigeon Township, Warrick Co., Ind., was born in Rockport, Spencer Co., this State, December 27, 1839, the eldest son of a family of eight children, five of whom are now living, born to Henry and Elizabeth (Powell) Harter, residents of Warrick County, and natives of Kentucky and Indiana respectively. Nicholas was raised and educated by his parents, and continued at home until the breaking out of the Rebellion, when he enlisted in Company E, Twenty-fifth Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served over three years. In August, 1864, he was discharged at Chattanooga and returned home, working for himself and others on the farm until his marriage, January 27, 1869, to Miss America Ann Turley, daughter of William and Rebecca (Oskins) Turley. To this union have been born the following named children: Emma A., Gracie W., William H., Louisa C., John L., Maud, Alma and Eva R. Mrs. Harter was born September 24, 1817. By occupation Mr. Harter is a farmer and stock-raiser, now owning 218 acres of good land well improved and with good buildings. He is an esteemed neighbor and citizen, a member of the Masonic fraternity and a Republican in politics. He began life a poor boy, but with industry and frugality has secured a comfortable home and valuable property.
