Below is a family biography included in The History of Switzerland County, Indiana published by Weakley, Harraman & Co. in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. GEORGE W. HEWITT, M. D., Vevay, was born in that city in 1840. He grew to maturity in the neighborhood of Bennington, and was educated at the Hartsville University. In September, 1861, he enlisted in Company H, Sixth Indiana Infantry, and during his term of service received a slight wound in the right side at the battle of Missionary Ridge. He served as sergeant, and two years as steward in the Marine Hospital, Vicksburg, Miss. Dr. Hewitt read medicine with Dr. L. W. Elliott, of Valparaiso, Ind.; attended the Ohio Medical College, at which he graduated in 1869, and in 1873 began practice at Cedar Grove, Franklin Co., Ind. In 1875 he located at Markland, from which point he came to Vevay in May, 1885. From 1869 to 1873 he occupied a chair in the Northern Indiana Normal School, at Valparaiso, as professor of mathematics in the commercial department of that institution. Dr. Hewitt was married in 1865 to Miss Debora M. Sweezy, a native of Jackson County, Mich., and a graduate of the Grass Lake Seminary. In 1874 this wife passed to the beyond, leaving one child — Urchel B. In 1875 Dr. Hewitt was again married, this time to Ella D. Beard, who was born in Gallatin County, Ky., in 1857. Three children are the fruits of this union: Dawson, Lucien G. and Jennie D. The Doctor is a member of the order of F. & A. M., I. O. O. F. and G. A. R. Mrs. Hewitt is a member of the Christian Church.
