JOHN W. HILTON, farmer and blacksmith; P. O. Bloomington; was born in Washington Co., Penn., Jan. 18, 1821; he moved from his native State to Ohio with his father’s family when he was 11 years old, and at the age of 16 he entered an apprenticeship as smith; he served three years and six months, and, until his removal from Ohio to Illinois, in 1873, his pursuits were entirely in that capacity. He was married in Ohio to Miss Mary Vasbander, who was born in Washington Co., Penn., A. D. 1826; they have four children — Margaret Jane, Thomas Hamilton, Mary Agnes and Jacob Newton. The farm of Mr. Hilton consists of 160 acres, valued at $7,500. During his residence in Ohio, he held office of Justice of the Peace in Harrison Co. nine years, and was also a participant in the local militia of that State, and at different times held offices of Captain and Lieutenant.
