Below is a family biography included in The History of Adams County, Illinois published by Murray, Williamson & Phelps in 1879.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. BENNESON, ROBERT S., retired; residence, 214 Jersey street; born in Newcastle county, Delaware, in 1807; moved to Philadelphia in 1828, and to Quincy, Illinois, in 1837. He married Electa A. Parks in 1842. She was born in Vermont in 1810. Have four children: Alice A., Annie J. Caroline and Cora Agnes. Are members of the Unitarian Church. He is a Republican. Seeing the necessity of raising funds to put the public schools in a more effective condition, he got up a petition to the Legislature for a tax of 12 ½ cents upon $100 of the assessed value of property in the city, to be used under the control of the proper officers for school purposes, which was granted. He was Alderman six years, and Mayor in 1859. He was a stock-holder in the Quincy Savings Bank, and director of the First National Bank, and one of the incorporators of the gas company, and president of it six years, and a director since its organization. He was in the lumber business in 1840, and shipped by steamboat from Cairo, Ohio, the first lumber he sold in Quincy, His youngest daughter, Cora A., is studying law.
