Below is a family biography included in The History of Adams County, Illinois published by Murray, Williamson & Phelps in 1879.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. BARLOW, JOSEPH C., manufacturer of corn planters; residence, 317 Kentucky street; was born in Bethany, Genesee county, New York, 1836; moved to this county with his father, J. K. Barlow, 1848; his mother was a sister of Stephen A. Douglas’ father. Mr. Barlow lost his father and mother by cholera when he was only twelve years old, and has been actively in business since that time. He married Miss Eveline W. Streeter, who was a sister of Gov. Wood’s first wife and was born in this city, 1837; their children are John W., Ella M., Emily L., Joseph C., Jr., Eva E., William R., and Allie. Mrs. Barlow is a member of the First Union Congregational Church. He is a Republican. He is now Superintendent and Treasurer of the Vandiver Corn Planter Company, which is largely engaged in the manufacture of corn planters. He is the inventor of the principal features of the three machines that they are manufacturing. The rotary, which bears his name, is the latest, and stands pre-eminent as a perfect machine. He established this manufactory in 1865; it was re-organized in 1870 — himself Superintendent and Treasurer.
