BECKETT, JAMES A., farmer; Sec. 17; P. O. Keokuk Junction; is the son of Robert A. and Mary Beckett, now living in Clayton township. He was born at the homestead in Adams county, April 24, 1840; enlisted Aug. 15, 1862, in Co. G, 78th Regt. Ill. Inf.; participated in a number of hard-fought battles; was slightly wounded at Kennesaw Mountain; accompanied Gen. Sherman in the march to the sea; was mustered out June 7, 1865. He was married Jan. 29, 1861, to Mary E. Black; born in Adams county, Aug. 27, 1841. Five children: Lizzie L., Hattie L., Harry E., Delia Fredonia and Ureth Lovenia. Member of the Masonic Order, and of the M. E. church; wife, member of the Presbyterian church. He is 1st Lieutenant of the Keokuk Junction Guards. Owns 200 acres of improved land, and fifty acres of timber, worth $40 per acre.
