A. J. Campbell, whose birth occurred in Wooster, Wayne Co., Ohio, August 28, 1845, is the son of Jared and Mary A. (Breidenthal) Campbell, the former a native of Ohio, and a blacksmith by trade. A. J. Campbell remained in his native State until sixteen years of age, and then went to Missouri with his parents, who settled In Moniteau County, where A. J. read medicine for some time. After completing his medical course he practiced for four years, and then attended the St. Louis Medical College, from which institution he graduated some time later. He was married In Moniteau County, Mo., to Miss Laura E. Houston, daughter of Dr. C. C. Houston, who was born in Tennessee, and who was a lineal descendant of the family of Gen. Samuel Houston. To this marriage were born four sous and a daughter: Edgar, J. Herbert, Judson, Oscar and Elfie. In 1884 Mr. Campbell left his lucrative practice in Morgan County, Mo., made a location at Lowell, Ark., and here engaged in merchandising until the spring of 1888, when he moved to Washington County, Ark. Mr. Campbell is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and he and wife are members of the Christian Church.
