H. W. Glasscock, mayor of Paragould and real estate dealer, was born in Randolph County, Ark., February 19, 1834, and is the son of George W. and Catherine (Gray) Glasscock, natives of Tennessee. The parents were married in their native State, and in about 1830 they emigrated to Arkansas, locating in Randolph County, and were among its very first settlers. Here the father died in 1834 and the mother three days later. They were the parents of seven children, three now living: William, Henry W., and George F. When the parents first made their home in Arkansas, the country was a wilderness, and wild animals were plentiful, the red man’s face frequently being seen at the door of the log cabin. H. W. Glasscock was reared in Randolph County, Ark., until twelve years of age, when he moved to Gainesville, Greene County. He was educated principally at Gainesville and in Mississippi. In 1858 he was elected county clerk of Greene County, and served until after the war. In 1861 he enlisted in the first regiment that was organized in Greene County, and left a deputy to attend to his business. He served in the eastern army and was discharged in 1862 on account of his health. He then came home and re-enlisted in Kitchens’ regiment in the cavalry, and was in command of Company E, serving until the surrender; he was on the raid through Missouri. After returning to his home he took charge of the clerk’s office, and in 1868 engaged in mercantile business at Gainesville, which he continued until 1883, when he sold out and came to Paragould. Since that time he has been occupied in the real estate business. He owns about 12,000 acres of land, with some 600 under cultivation. His lands are among the best in the country, as he has been investing and buying since 1857. Mr. Glasscock was elected mayor of Paragould in April, 1888, which position he is now filling. He was married first in 1858 to Miss Amanda Conduff, by whom he had four children, two now living: H. F. and Sudie. His second marriage was to Mrs. Emily J. Williamson, by whom he has six children, four now living: John, Jennie, Etta and Albert (twins). Mr. and Mrs. Glasscock and family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and Mr. Glasscock is a member of the Masonic fraternity and Knights of Pythias. He is one of the prominent and leading citizens of his vicinity.
