Rev. James S. Nicholson has been actively occupied in preaching the Gospel with the earnestness and sincerity which have redounded to his own good and to the honor and glory of his Master. He is a well-known minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church and belongs to the Little Rock Conference. Born in Mississippi, in 1852, in what is now called Alcorn County, he is the son of Rev. A. Nicholson, a native of Alabama, who was a local preacher for several years before and after his marriage to Miss Caroline Herring, also of that State. His long and faithful life was ended in Prairie County, Ark., in 1886, and his self-sacrificing work for the church resulted in many converts who will shine as gems in his crown. J. S. Nicholson, the subject of this sketch, joined the church when quite a young man and at an early date evinced a desire to follow his father’s calling. In September, 1873, he was licensed to preach, and admitted to the ministry in 1878, and in the fall of 1881, came to Arkansas, joining this conference in the fall of the same year. He has had charge of several churches annually and has resided in Sheridan since June, his labors extending during this time over congregations in Prairie, Clark, Garland, Montgomery, Saline, as well as Grant Counties. July 2, 1874, he married Mary H. Patton, a native of Mississippi. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson have four children living and have lost one. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity.
