John Swearingen was born October 2, 1848, in Crawford County, Ark., and is a son of Samuel and Sallie (Cox) Swearingen [see sketch], and a brother of R. E. and P. B. Swearingen, whose sketches also appear in this book. He was not able to attend school until after the war, and at the age of twenty-three began farming on his own account. In 1873 he married Miss Susan Clonch, who was born in Texas in 1856, and is a daughter of William and Margeret (Bailey) Clonch. They were born in Kentucky in 1832, and were married in their native State in 1853. From Kentucky they went to Texas, and from there came to this county, dying in 1874 and 1865, respectively. Mr. Clonch was a mechanic and carpenter by trade. To Mr. Swearingen and wife seven children have been born, four boys and three girls. In politics our subject is a Democrat, and his first presidential vote was cast for Horace Greeley. Mr. S. is a well-to-do farmer and respected citizen.
