James K. P. Howell was born in Crawford County, Ark., in 1844, and is a son of William and Elizabeth (Cheneault) Howell, natives of Arkansas and Tennessee, respectively. The father was a farmer, and died in 1844. The mother was born in 1819, and died in January, 1870. Of her two children, our subject is the only one living. He grew to manhood upon a farm, and lived with his mother during her lifetime. During the latter part of the war he served nine months in Capt. Miles’ company, Col. Wallace’s regiment. In 1868 he married Mary C. Wilson, who was born in Buchanan County, Mo., in 1851, and now has six children: Emma, Henry F., Minnie, Tennessee, Mary Willie, and an infant daughter. Mr. Howell owns 287 acres of land on Lee’s Creek, seven miles northwest of Van Buren, and until recently living upon his farm. He then purchased a restaurant in Van Buren of Mr. Kronk, of which he has since been the proprietor. He keeps a first-class restaurant in every respect, setting a good table and having everything neat and comfortable. He is a Mason, and himself and wife belong to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In politics he is a Democrat.
